A Drowning City

Gonaives, Haiti – On Sept 1st  Gonaives was devastated by hurricane Hanna and left residents of the city stranded on rooftops for days before flooding as severe as 15 to 20 feet resided.  The storm killed hundreds and displaced thousands of people. Due to severe deforestation in the mountains surrounding the city there is nothing to hold the ground into place during the rainy season.  The city remains vulnerable to catastrophic mudslides and floods.
